Early overnight ratings figures reveal The Vampire Diaries made a steady return to The CW last night in an evening laden with repeats.

At 8pm The Vampire Diaries returned to The CW from the mid-season break with The New Deal as Mystic Falls dealt with the consequences of Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) quest for revenge against Klaus (Joseph Morgan). The episode pulled in 3.1 million viewers with a 1.4 18-49 rating – holding steady on its mid-season finale Homecoming

Elena’s back-stabbing ways may come back to haunt her on The Vampire Diaries.

In the CW series’ midseason finale, Elena (Nina Dobrev) proved that she, too, was capable of killing when she stabbed and killed Rebekah (Claire Holt) as she prepared for the homecoming dance. But since when has being dead stopped a vampire?

“We haven’t seen the last of Rebekah,” executive producer Julie Plec tells TVGuide.com. “The fact that Elena killed Rebekah is going to come back to bite her in the butt.”

When the series picks up in January, not only does the Original sister return in a flashback, but she also makes her presence felt in the present day.

“I’m not going to say when she makes her reappearance, but certainly her being undaggered is not in Elena’s best interest,” Plec teases.

If you’ve ever seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, or The Color of Money, then you are aware of legendary actor Paul Newman. Well, starting in Season 3, Episode 11, “Our Town,” his grandson Daniel Newman (One Tree Hill, Heroes) will be joining the Mystic Falls crew on The Vampire Diaries. Newman will play Daniel Warren, a mysterious stranger.

We know how well mysterious strangers usually fare on TVD, and considering Newman has roles in The Great Gatsby and The Dark Knight Rises coming up, it seems unlikely that this newcomer will be cooling his heels at the Grill for long.

As first reported by Michael Ausiello, the series will flashback yet again on the 13th episode of season three (scheduled for January 26), this time to 1491, where we’ll meet another member of the Original family.

Klaus and Rebekah’s brother, his name will be Finn and he’ll have gotten very close to Katherine on at least one occasion… if you know what we mean!
