When it premiered in September, The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” drew the largest audience of any other premiere since the network’s 2006 debut, and it has maintained impressive momentum ever since. On the heels of a 2010 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama, the show returns tonight after a nine-week hiatus.
“Degrassi: The Next Generation” alum Nina Dobrev, who recently celebrated her 21st birthday, is pulling double duty. She not only stars as the show’s magnetic ingenue, Elena Gilbert, but also as her civil-war-era doppelgänger, the bloodthirsty vampiress Katherine Pierce.
The fall finale left us with a shocking cliffhanger. Elena, having discovered the disturbing truth about her resemblance to Katherine, stormed out of Stefan’s bedroom — only to get into a car wreck with a mysterious supernatural creature while driving through the woods.
Despite the demands of playing two characters, Nina made time to chat with me about her favorite episode, Elena’s post-car-accident dilemma, and which of her castmates served as inspiration for Katherine’s devil-may-care attitude.
Congratulations on all the success! To win something like a People’s Choice Award, that’s voted on by fans, must be incredibly gratifying.
We felt so good to be nominated, but you never really expect to win, and then they didn’t fly any of us out there, so we just assumed that we didn’t win it. We wrapped for the day in Atlanta and went out to dinner, a couple of us, and we got a text message that we won and we all kind of freaked out, like, “What? Really? Are you serious?” It was very cool.
“With a vampire show come the night shoots and the long hours,” says a weary Dobrev, speaking from Atlanta where the series is filmed. “DeGrassi had a large ensemble cast, so we wouldn’t shoot every day and, because it was a high-school show, most of the scenes were shot during the day. On this show, we start late on Monday and every day we push later and later. By Friday night, sometimes we end up shooting until 4 or 5 a.m. on Saturday morning.”
The CW recently interviewed Nina Dobrev who plays Elena Gilbert on their new hit vampire show, “The Vampire Diaries,” which is originally based on a popular book series that holds the same title. She started off by describing a little bit about her character on the show. She goes on to explain the premise of the show in great detail.
She said Elena was involved in a car crash with her parents. They died, but she survived,so now she’s struggling to get over that. Then she meets these two guys, Stefan and Damon that fight over her. They both grew up in the same town that she’s in,and now they have returned.
She said right now, her character doesn’t now that the guy she’s dating,Stefan is a vampire, but as soon as she finds out,it’s going to get crazy. Next, she describes Damon’s character. She said he tries to come in and mess everything up.
She says her character is the moral center of the show, but can sometimes make mistakes. She concluded the interview by saying it’s hard to date a vampire.
Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays nights at 7pm central time on the CW.
