Interview: Daniel Gillies on Vampire Diaries Return, Reunion, Major Episode Ahead

Posted by Angela with No Comments

I tried, Vampire Diaries fans.

I poked and prodded and hinted and tried to get Daniel Gillies to spill some details on whether or not his newly revived Original would soon be reunited with all three brothers and his sister – but he just laughed and kept making the same point when the topic arose:

“It’s the season of the Originals, like Julie Plec said awhile back. I’m just gonna hide behind that.”

Still, we can all read between those exciting lines, can’t we?

Elijah is Back!

For awhile now, Gillies said he was “pretty confident” he’d return to Mystic Falls, expressing shock and gratitude for the fans’ reaction to Elijah.

“The character just grew in popularity, more so than I ever expected him to,” said the actor. “I’ve died four times and been resurrected four times. It’s great.”

So now that Elijah is back in the suspense-filled picture, what can we expect from him? How does he view the brother who recently placed him, once again, in “the big sleep,” as Gillies referred to his dormant state?

“They’re gonna have to put aside their differences,” the star said. “Let’s face it, both of us have betrayed the other in some way, Klaus obviously more prolifically than Elijah, but Elijah has done his fair share, as well.”

Referring specifically to Thursday’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” Gillies teased the episode will “dictate the course” of the next several installments, with “terms and parameters” getting laid out for various characters.

Gillies explains Elijah’s relationship with Klaus as having been “appallingly adversarial for hundreds of years” and said if there’s any love at all on his character’s end, it was “suppressed” a long time ago.

At this point, Elijah has one item on his agenda: getting his family back together.

The actor doesn’t know (or perhaps just can’t say) how long he’ll be around for this time, but he couldn’t stop gushing about the cast and crew on The Vampire Diaries.

“I can’t tell you how much I love my job with these guys,” he said. “And I really, really love Julie Plec. She’s the most considerate boss I’ve ever had… just so diplomatic and so careful to really listen to you when you have an issue.”

That really is very nice to hear, but getting back to Klaus and Rebekah and Finn and Kol and…

“It’s the season of the Originals,” Gillies said again.

See, I tried.

Kevin Williamson THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Interview

Posted by Angela with No Comments

Executive producer Kevin Williamson clearly gets as excited and passionate about his CW drama series The Vampire Diaries as the fans of the show do. Currently in its third season, the show is exciting and dangerous, in a way that most shows strive for but never quite live up to, leaving characters in serious peril, on a weekly basis.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Williamson talked about why it was finally the right time to have that Damon-Elena kiss that many have been anxiously waiting for, how Stefan is now a true tragic hero, knowing the right time to kill off a character, embracing the melodrama in a way that makes it epic, and what he’s excited about for the remainder of the season. He also talked about his latest pilot, which he’s been looking to make for 15 years, about a serial killer who escapes from prison and has a cult of killers helping him, while an FBI agent is working to bring them down. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

‘Vampire Diaries’: Paul Wesley on Stefan’s ‘incredibly hostile’ episode (and why he doesn’t want this arc to end)

Posted by Angela with No Comments

When we talked to Paul Wesley about this Thursday’s episode of The Vampire Diaries – the one in which Stefan mentions turning Elena (Nina Dobrev) into a vampire, bites his wrist, and may force her to drink his blood in a speeding vehicle – he hadn’t seen it. He had, however, received a call from TVD exec producer Julie Plec to tell him the intense moments between Stefan and Elena were some of her favorite scenes. “He’s essentially kidnapping her,” Wesley says. “There’s layers of humanity, regret, and sadness in his eyes, but it’s all sort of masked by this sociopathic, raging maniac who’s scaring her to death. His relationship [with Elena] is sort of the antithesis of what it was, which was this really romantic, soft, protective relationship. Elena is the key to everything [in his battle with Klaus], and Stefan will go to any extreme to get what he needs, which makes him much more terrifying.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It’s an interesting turn in Stefan’s arc that it’s after his humanity begins to creep back in and he saves Damon that he becomes more of a villain than he ever was when the switch was fully in the ‘off’ position.
PAUL WESLEY:
He reveals that if he lets any emotions or feelings in, all he feels is deep pain and regret, so he doesn’t want to go there. He’d prefer to just sort of rationalize it by being… incredibly hostile. [Laughs]

Are we going to cry watching this episode?
Who’s we? [Laughs] It depends on how susceptible you are to the Stefan-Elena love story/tragedy.

Well, I talked to Plec about scenes on the show that have made her cry, and you got us both with that call Stefan made to Elena on her 18th birthday — and you didn’t even speak.
Ah, that’s cool. I think any time anybody sees the bad guy show emotion and you’re not hitting the audience over the head, there’s always a tinge of empathy for that individual. So if we did it correctly, and Stefan shows his humanity in the most subtle ways, and we don’t hit the audience over the head with ‘Oh, feel bad for me, I’m a tortured soul,’ then I think it will be effective. But again, I haven’t seen it. But supposedly it’s great. [Laughs]

I was surprised that Stefan agreed to let Damon join forces with him so quickly in last week’s episode. What’s your theory there: Did he realize he needs minions like Klaus has, or was it simply better to give Damon something to do so Damon doesn’t do something on his own that jeopardizes Stefan’s plan?
It is interesting: In that scene, all the sudden he’s like, “You want in? Okay, I’ll let you in on this.” Maybe it’s because he wants to be closer to Elena. Maybe it’s because [this is the one time] you keep your friends closer than your enemies. It’s his brother. They’re buddies. You can justify it so many different ways. I really have no idea.

Early in season 2, you sat down with Plec and said that while you love Stefan’s heroic side, as an actor, you’d love to dirty him up a bit. She told you she and Kevin Williamson already had that in the works. Has this arc turned out to be everything you hoped for?
Yeah, I don’t want the arc to end. I don’t want to go back to being the good guy. Look, Julie said we’re gonna milk it as long as we can. I also understand that things get old. Hopefully this is still new and fresh. You know, he was the good guy for two years. Maybe I can do another two years as the bad guy to balance it out. [Laughs] I think everybody likes playing the bad boy.

And everybody likes watching the bad boy.
I was talking to Torrey [DeVitto, his wife, who's now recurring on the show as Dr. Fell], and she’s like, “You know, I watch Vampire Diaries all the time. I’ve always enjoyed watching Stefan. But now that you’re playing him as the bad guy, it’s, like, infinitely more entertaining and pleasurable to watch.” [Laughs] I’m thinkin’ to myself, it’s so funny, you’d think the girls would enjoy the good guy, the hero, the protagonist. But it’s like, no, that’s why nice guys finish last. [Laughs] It’s really true. And as an actor, it’s just so much more enjoyable.

With Stefan, it’s really the best of both worlds: He’s a bad boy, but we don’t have to feel guilty for enjoying him because we refuse to believe Good Stefan isn’t under there somewhere.
I refuse to believe that he’s not under there either.

Kat Graham Teases ‘TVD’s’ Next Big Shock!

Posted by Angela with No Comments

The Vampire Diaries returned with one of it’s most jaw-dropping episodes to date last night as Bonnie & Stefan teamed up to keep Klaus’ coffins hidden, Tyler continued to let the original vampire work him like a puppet, Elena went to shocking lengths to keep Jeremy safe and Damon finally said screw it when he laid a big, internet-shocking kiss on his modern day love.

To help make sense of it all and find out what’s next for The CW’s best show — and one of TheInsider.com’s 11 Best Shows of 2011 — I caught up with Kat Graham to talk all about Bonnie’s new partnership, and why it could spell doom for Mystic Falls’ most fierce witch.

Insider.com: Last night’s episode saw Bonnie have a prophetic dream. Is that a new “power?”
Kat Graham: It’ll happen a little bit more of it in terms of trying to crack the code, which I think it so interesting because you see so much of the supernatural in the actual Mystic Falls world, but you don’t really see it in terms of a subconscious way. I thought it was really cool that they gave Bonnie that.

Insider: It’s the latest example of her forming an uneasy alliance with The Salvatore brothers. Why do you think she continues to team up with them when they’ve caused her so much personal pain?
Kat: I think that all Bonnie really wants to do is protect the greater good and because of that she’s gone against so many of her instincts.

Insider: In this dream, she saw Klaus lying in the coffin that in reality can’t be opened. How long will it remain sealed?
Kat: I can’t say how long it will be but I can tell you that whatever is in that coffin is extremely important to the future of what’s happening in Mystic Falls – and the show in general. There’s a lot of weight to that reveal.

Insider: Suffice it to say, the reveal will be, in true TVD fashion, shocking?
Kat: So shocking. I thought that by season three they wouldn’t be able to shock me anymore, but that has not been the case at all. It’s always said that a third season is the best season, and in our case, that’s so true. This year is so incredibly shocking. It’s a mind f*** and I love it [laughs]. People will not believe what’s coming and the degree of twists and turns with how they interlock the originals with other things and how their relationships with everyone in Mystic Falls is going to play out.

Insider: Last night didn’t really deal with this, but where is Bonnie’s head at in terms of Jeremy after the whole Anna thing?
Kat: If you really love somebody, I don’t think you could ever get over a pain like that and I think Bonnie was opening herself up to him, in spite of her trust issues [laughs]. So I think it was devastating for her. I also think she knows that Jeremy is young and people make mistakes, so it’s half and half.

Insider: In next week’s episode, titled Our Town, Bonnie finds out Elena had Damon compel Jeremy into leaving Mystic Falls. How does she react?
Kat: It’s shocking – I don’t know if I can say that she’s happy or sad about [him leaving], it’s a lot of mixed emotions. Which I like. She kind of wanted him to leave town because of everything that happened but now that he’s gone, she’s sad. It’s that thing where you want something to happen but when it does, you’re no longer sure you wanted it to happen. If anything, she’s more shocked by Elena’s choice to compel Jeremy to leave. Her reaction to that is very interesting.

Insider: Caroline’s birthday is the big event in next week’s episode and the group throws her a birthday party in a tomb. Whose idea was that?
Kat: [laughs] It wasn’t Bonnie’s idea! It wasn’t Bonnie’s idea! She’s not that creepy. But I will tell you that it’s a very cool location we’ve never filmed in before and it’s important that people pay attention. You should pay attention to everything on this show because it always circles back into play somehow.

Insider: What else should people look out for next week?
Kat: What I love next week is the way Caroline was written. Her take on being a vampire is something that hasn’t been explored and I love how [co-creator] Julie Plec chose to explore being a young adult as a vampire and that transition. It’s so genius how she so subtlety did it – there’s so much depth to it.

Insider: Whenever The CW sets up a big round of phoners for you, it’s because Bonnie is quickly put in a life or death situation. Safe to say that’s the case here?
Kat: I love that she’s always in danger of dying. Half of me doesn’t want to be killed off the show, but I want people to be nervous – I don’t want anyone to get comfortable with the mortality of these characters. I love my fans and I love this show, but because of her fearlessness and self-sacrificing nature, it doesn’t have to be a killer that takes her out. It could be herself.

Insider: If Bonnie does die, is that how you’d like her to go out?
Kat: I would prefer a big, huge, blow-out self-sacrificial death. That’s who she is. Bonnie is a powerhouse character and if it were to come to death one day, I would hope it was a choice she made to die.

Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

‘Vampire Diaries’ exec hints at Damon, Elena ‘payoff’

Posted by Angela with No Comments

The Vampire Diaries‘ executive producer Julie Plec has revealed that “ultimately, there will be a payoff” in the relationship between Damon and Elena.

Plec suggested to TV Line that there will be some developments in the pair’s will-they-won’t-they storyline in upcoming episodes.

“We’re not in the business of the eternal tease that never goes anywhere,” she said. “That’s not how we like to tell our stories.”

However, Plec added that the developments may take fans aback, saying: “[Especially] what it is and when it happens may be surprising to people.”

Plec also dropped hints about the arrival of new character Dr Fell, played by guest star Torrey DeVitto.

Dr Fell could be a love interest for Alaric (Matt Davis) but Plec teased that she is “definitely more than what she seems” and revealed that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will be unhappy about her presence.

“Her interest in [Alaric] makes Damon concerned and suspicious about what she might be hiding,” she revealed. “[He tries to find out if she] is worthy of any kind of relationship with his buddy. He doesn’t necessarily like what he finds.”

Plec has previously revealed that Elena (Nina Dobrev) will be unhappy with Stefan (Paul Wesley) as he becomes obsessed with getting rid of Klaus (Joseph Morgan).

‘The Vampire Diaries’ Kat Graham: Could Bonnie hook up with Klaus?

Posted by Angela with No Comments

tvd-bonnie.jpgAfter taking a backseat for several episodes, Bonnie and her witchy powers are back in full force when “The Vampire Diaries” returns to The CW on Thursday, Jan. 5. Zap2it caught up with Kat Grahamto dish about all the exciting things coming up for her character.

The only obstacle: Not spoiling too much about upcoming episodes. “I don’t even tell my boyfriend anything,” Graham says when we try to squeeze a little too much information out of her. “He’s always like, ‘What’s gonna happen?’ because I got him addicted to the show. And I don’t even tell him a thing. He has no idea what’s going on.”
Here’s what we didget her to share:

Tell us about Bonnie and Stefan teaming up.
You know, it’s kind of an odd pairing — but then not so odd because Stefan kind of comes into a situation where he needs to turn to Bonnie for help. Bonnie is never really forced into anything, and sometimes I think it’s perceived that way because she’s such a sweet character. But this is a choice that Bonnie wants to make for the greater good of all, so she teams up with Stefan to accomplish that. So she really weighs the options before entering into this agreement.
I think that with “The Vampire Diaries” you never know what’s going to happen, and I don’t think the characters necessarily know either. So you can only weigh so much, and then it might just come down to “kill or be killed.”

The show always comes down to that, doesn’t it? Elsewhere in Bonnie land, she was deeply hurt by Jeremy but obviously still cares about him. How is she dealing with the breakup?
Well, I love that it’s a very human side to her. If they went kind of “all-powerful, unstoppable witch, fearless, fierce all the time,” I think it would bore people and maybe have them turn against her. So the fact that there’s still a pain there, that has kind of awakened her. It makes her human; it makes her relatable; it makes her real.

Will she be getting another love interest soon?
You know, I don’t know which way they’re going with it. I enjoy the pairing and I love that they explored a more sexual side to Bonnie. I love exploring that side of the character, but I’m also happy being independent and not necessarily being the character that needs a man. So I love that she’s a little heartbroken right now and she’s mending it solo. But I would love to see — there’s so many quote unquote ‘shippings of Bonnie with everyone from, like, Damon to Klaus, so I think that really could go any which way. It just depends on what they are inspired to do with her.

Could you really see Bonnie with Klaus? It seems like she would have none of that.
No, I could! You never know! It could go any way. The fact that she wouldn’t have any of it and the fact that she’s anti-bullshit would also make for a strong pairing because it’s that “hate you so much, kiss me” kind of thing. I believe that it could go any way with any character, honestly. If you have enough imagination and creativity and you do it without any holes, I think it could be done well.

Well, the writers have proven that you can’t really predict anything on this show anyway.
No, no way.

Tell us a little bit more about Bonnie’s mom coming to town.
They cast Persia White, who I’ve always loved and adored, as my mom, and she comes into the picture and I go on a hunt to find her and finally get to see her. It’s intersting, that relationship. It’s interesting to see develop, I will say that.

Is Bonnie guarded when her mom arrives?
I think Bonnie’s guarded, period. I think she’s always been guarded, even from the pilot. Guarded about accepting that she’s a descendant from the Salem witches. Guarded about Elena dating Stefan. Guarded about Damon. She’s always been written to be somewhat skeptical. So when her mother comes in, I don’t think there’s any difference there. I think that it’s all about “prove yourself.” There has to be a reason to why she hasn’t seen her for 15 years, and you get to find that watching the show.

What else can you tell us about Bonnie’s relationship with her mom?
I will say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and that what would eventually bring her back into Bonnie’s life is not what you think.

Mysterious! So how is Bonnie’s friendship with Elena progressing?
I think the foundation of their relationship is solid, but you will start to see some serious bumps come along where Elena is forced to make decisions based on the facts at hand, and maybe not necessarily the repercussions — and the repercussions might be Bonnie. There are going to be a couple of bumps, and I don’t know how deep those bumps are going to go or how high. You are going to see happy and sad, which I think is normal, but there are going to be certain instances that have never happened before that are going to happen this season with Bonnie and Elena.
