The end of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES‘ innagural season is almost upon us, so we here at iF Magazine thought it would be a perfect time to talk with one of its young stars, Ian Somerhalder. Damon is his name, and being a bastard is his game. The cynical brother of leading man Stefan (Paul Wesley), Damon gets to have all the fun on the show by just being his bad self. Here’s what he had to say about the first season of the CW’s hit show, what to expect before season one is in the books, and a little jab at TWILIGHT.

iF MAGAZINE: What’s been the biggest surprise about the whole VAMPIRE DIARIES experience?

IAN SOMERHALDER: This whole experience is a surprise. It’s like having a secret that we didn’t tell anyone and we were hoping that they would like it as much as we did. And they did for now! Until people stop watching! The whole experience is amazing. This group of people, our crew, is the most phenomenal crew I’ve ever met in my career. And this cast, I love and adore them. We have a blast. I have so much respect for them. And have amazing craft service. The best.

iF: Will the people who have read THE VAMPIRE DIARIES book, will they know what’s coming or are you guys going to go in a different direction?

SOMERHALDER: We deviate a bit. Not a bit, a lot. And it’s necessary just for production reasons. This isn’t a movie. This is a show that’s going to evolve and we’re going to get to evolve with these characters and we’re going to get to see hopefully everyone of these girls half naked. It’s for the audience. I want the audience to be satisfied.

iF: You and Paul Wesley seem to have a great onscreen rapport. Was it there since the day you started?

SOMERHALDER: We love each other. We are like brothers. We dress alike. It’s kind of freaky. But we do have a great rapport. The thing is I realize this: I could be doing this with anyone else… Paul is such a phenomenally talented committed actor, and he’s my good friend, and we could be doing this with anybody else and we got lucky. We worked really hard to get these roles and we’re going to continue to work even harder to keep them.

iF: Damon and Stefan have quite a history together, with Damon often pulling of some outrageous antics. What do you think is Damon’s motivation for his behavior?

SOMERHALDER: Love. Love and loneliness for his brother and missing his girl and missing his brother. Damon’s a lonely bastard. Imagine being that old.

iF: Are you inspired by other past vampires such as Kiefer Sutherland from THE LOST BOYS?

SOMERHALDER: I was so obsessed with THE LOST BOYS. Really one of my favorite vampire movies is SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE because it was just so not this romanticized, physical, sensual beautiful thing. It was really what I always imagined vampires to be. In that film, you almost feel like what it would be like to be cold and death. Willem Dafoe is on another planet as far as how talented he is.

But, you know, no. I think the inspiration that I have is more… this comes from other actors that I remember watching growing up and just wanting to be those people.

iF: Have you seen any of the TWILIGHT movies?

SOMERHALDER: I haven’t seen any TWILIGHT movies, none of them. I didn’t want to make that comparison. And I’ve never read any of the books. So to answer your question, I will not be seeing them. Maybe I’m one of the only people in the country who will not be seeing them.

iF: The story line is similar, but the show seems very different.
SOMERHALDER: There are some common denominators, but it is its own entity. (Creators) Kevin (Williamson), Julie (Plec) and everyone have worked very hard to make sure that it is its own entity. It’s a living, breathing, evolving show, on its own.

Say it isn’t so I swear it feels like just yesterday I was posting news about who was going to be cast in The Vampire Diaries and now I am posting about the season finale!

Ian Somerhalder tweeted today was his last day heading to set for 8 weeks :(

Paul Wesley is going to be on Live with Regis And Kelly sadly I was able to obtain tickets and be put on the list but I work until 7 am and it starts and 830 am.  If toddlers were allowed I would go but the baby doesn’t go to school until 845 am :(   One day I will get a chance to meet the cast just not tomorrow.

Finale The CW released information regarding the season finale which will be called Founders Day.

Founder’s Day has finally arrived, and everyone is busy with last-minute preparations for floats and fireworks. Although Damon and Alaric do their best to stop him, Johnathan Gilbert sets a plan in motion that brings Founder’s Day to an end amid chaos, destruction and death.

Oh boy I knew that man was trouble hes worse then the vampires in the town you know what I think I think he has vampire envy!

Thanks to VampireSite.net we have our first peak at the episode!

We also have a couple new released promos of Damon and Elena and of course they leave that relationship on the back burner until the end so we are craving it and going through withdrawal during the summer months.  I do think they played the attraction of them very subtly.  I am not on any team I like Damon and Stefan equally and if I were Elena I would fully participate in a polygimist relationship lol

Not only does Ian Somerhalder get to have a great time playing the bad-ass and oftentimes evil vampire Damon Salvatore on the hit CW television series The Vampire Diaries, but he will also be reprising his role as Boone for the Final Season of the ABC drama Lost. A logistical nightmare, with his current day job being located in Atlanta, Georgia, while Lost films in Hawaii, Somerhalder is fortunate that the executive producers for The Vampire Diaries are working out his schedule to make it all happen.

While at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Ian Somerhalder talked to IESB about how lucky he feels to be able to have the closure for his character on Lost while playing a sociopathic vampire who kills purely for the enjoyment of it on The Vampire Diaries.

Q: Can you talk about returning for the first Lost episode this season?

Ian: Not even a little bit. Out of respect for them, I can’t say anything.

Q: What was it like to be back?

Ian: It was great. It was so fun to be back. I was shooting all day, landed in Hawaii, went to set, did hair and make-up, and then slept. I woke up the next morning, went to set and then left.

Q: So, it was a whirlwind for you then?

Ian: Yeah, but it was amazing to see everyone and be a part of that group again. Everyone has stayed the same, yet changed.

Q: What memories stand out for you, from being a part of Lost?

Ian Somerhalder, in Part I of our Exclusive Interview, talked in some detail about The Vampire Diaries.  Now, in Part II of our conversation, he discusses his long-awaited return to Lost.  Will his character, Boone, appear in flashbacks?  In an alternate timeline?  As a ghost or a figment of someone’s imagination?  The truth is that Somerhalder wasn’t able to say too much about reprising his role as Boone on ABC’s top-secret sci-fi show that will kick off its sixth and final season on Feb. 2 with the episode “LA X.”  Still, we gave it our best shot and then got Somerhalder chatting about some other topics, too.  So please read on.

ARAMUS — A crowd of about 500 excited fans waited in line Saturday at Westfield Garden State Plaza to meet the stars of “The Vampire Diaries,” the CW Network teen TV drama.

Fans, mostly teens, crowded Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus for a chance to meet the stars of 'The Vampire Diaries,' Ian Somerhalder, left, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley.

Fans, mostly teens, crowded Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus for a chance to meet the stars of ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ Ian Somerhalder, left, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley.

Many held roses and home-made posters, and some wore “Vampire Diaries” T-shirts and their hearts on their sleeves.

“I think I’m Ian’s [Somerhalder] biggest fan. I got him a rose and made him a card, and I started crying when I found out I was going to meet him,” said Bianca Iannacco, 16, of Wayne, who was first on the scene with friend Aylin Erzene, 16. They arrived Saturday at 5 a.m. to get in line for a 3 p.m. appearance by the cast.

The popular television series stars Somerhalder and Paul Wesley as vampire brothers and Nina Dobrev as the female protagonist, Elena.

Due to cold weather, mall security and Paramus police directed fans to wait in the delivery passageway near Hot Topic, where an autograph signing took place.

Sonia Polichetti from Highland Mills, N.Y., arrived at 7 a.m. with her 20-year-old son, Joe, who was there to meet Dobrev.

“We sit together and watch the show and I love it,” said Sonia Polichetti. “I’m here for the two brothers. I’m taking them home with me.”

Attendees had to purchase a $25 “Vampire Diaries” T-shirt from Hot Topic to get a wristband to the event, which sold out earlier in the week.

The 3 p.m. signing was followed by a performance by Atlanta-based band The Constellations and a question-and-answer session with Somerhalder, Wesley and Dobrev.
